Many organizations, confronted with $40,000 back and shoulder workers’ comp claims, have attempted to prevent them with little to no success.
In 1992 FIT was established to solve these injuries for organizations in the US and Canada. The logical sequence we followed was: whatever others are doing to stop these injuries isn’t working so we better do something different.
There were four major problems to solve if we were to be successful.
- Why were all other workplace strain/strain injury prevention strategies failing?
- What is the underlying cause of these way-too-common injuries, not just at work, but in everyday life too? *This is a critical element to our success.*
- What would a workable training curriculum look like that would prevent them?
- This training curriculum evolved when we realized that no matter how impressive we thought it was, it was of NO value if employees weren’t interested or worse, even rejected it. So problem #4 was how to adapt the curriculum to work for every organization and more importantly, how to get employees to listen and use the information willingly at work and at home!
This number 4 was the secret sauce that answered why all other programs failed. We knew that in order to establish a sprain/strain injury prevention culture, it started with the employees’ acceptance driven by personal benefits.
Over the three decades of helping 1,000,000+ employees of all description, we still witness other market initiatives that fail. From low tech back belts to expensive exoskeletons; to on-site athletic trainers with no specific expertise of proper job specific biomechanics; to wholesale reengineering of tools and plants without the proper auxiliary biomechanics training; to expensive office furniture that no one knows how to adjust properly. Back and should claims and office worker discomfort continue unfortunately.
Complicated problems are often solved with simple solutions!
What if there was one specific reason why most back injuries occur? What if there was an easy solution that only took two hours to train employee groups that prevented back and shoulder injuries at work and at home?
What if employees actually listened and learned brand new information that our society doesn’t offer anywhere else? What if they requested the training to be done annually and even thanked the organization for it. AND what if this new information could be culturalized to prevent injuries for the long term?
AND drum roll please…what if you could train hundreds of employees for less than the cost of one back claim?
